Inclining Experiment

So, today is my 21st birthday! Now on a completely unrelated topic, this is a brief post about the inclining experiment M Ship Co. performed onthe recently designed Dive Support Boat for the US Navy.

Yesterday I saw 0430 for the first time in ages, as I had to catch the 0515 trolley to downtown. After batting my eyelashes at the security guard of the building I was able to get up to the office to meet my boss  and gather some essential items we needed for the  experiement before heading to Marine Group Boat works in Chula Vista.

The entire day was so much fun. From taking measurements and pictures to attempting to move extremely heavy drums of water, I had a pretty fun day; plus, which I suppose was the point of me helping with the experiment, I learned quite a bit about the process of performing an inclining experiment and about the post-test calculations and analysis

Also, despite the clouds it was an absolutely beautiful day. It was well worth the early morning date with 0430!

Another Day in Paradise!

Another great day.

After a late night of eating burgers at the Station and watching marathons of Mudcats at Pete's house, John and I made sure to sleep in today.

After getting up around 11:30, we immediately decided to take advantage of the beautiful, 75 degree, weather and head to the pool to catch up on some reading and enjoy the sunshine. I felt like I was on vacation! Somehow, I think I could get used to this...

Afterwards, we headed to Mission Valley Mall to grab a few items we needed for the week. We then decided to head to Ocean Beach.

Elli, John and I walked the OB pier, which happens to be the longest pier in California, and did some shopping. Ocean Beach is such a unique place! It almost feels like you are back in the 70s. Long hair, hippie-esque clothes, no shoes, and beautiful weather. I must be California dreaming! After some wandering we headed to Hodad's for dinner (I know, I'm obsessed!), and took a cab back to Mission Valley.

Overall, It was a pretty relaxing Sunday!

Food, Flea Markets, and Sheriffs

What a great few days.

To start, on Thursday I took John to In-N-Out Burger for the first time. Double-Double Animal Style, it was love at first bite. I mean, I would have been doing a disservice to John if I didn't take him there within the first few weeks of being in So Cal; it is basically a right of passage.

So, this brings us to Friday. On Friday I had a pretty relaxing evening. I got home from work at around 4:30 and did some cleaning and reading. John was out, so it was nice to have the apartment to myself. I made myself a delicious ramen meal and was greeted a few hours later by John, Elli, and Erin. We were all pretty tired from a long work week and quickly sunk into the couch and watched a Law and Order: SVU marathon (I basically forced everyone to watch it with me...). Elli left pretty early, and soon after Pete Stanton '03 came over to join our relaxing evening. Pete left a little later and Erin spent the night.

Today, Erin, Elli, John and I headed to the Kobey's swap meet, which was in essence a huge flea market! Wow was it huge! I had never seen anything like it in my life. From bags to army gear to groceries and socks, this place had everything. Fortunately I was able to contain myself and only buy a few things.

A few hours later after noticing how hungry we were, Elli, John, Erin and I headed to Old Town for a bite to eat and a bit of exploring. Upon arriving we went to this place called the Alamo and had amazing burritos! Afterwards, while wandering, we came across the San Diego Sheriff's Museum! It was really neat. Outside they had old Sheriffs cars on display, and inside was an "interactive" exhibit detailing the history of Sherrifs in San Diego! It was super fascinating!

After a long day of exploring, Erin headed to La Jolla to meet Lauren and her family, while John, Elli, and I headed back to the apartment for some reading and relaxing on the porch. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Webb Alumni Dinner

What an excellent evening.

Today, John, Elli, Lauren, Erin and I attended the San Diego Webb Alumni dinner at Cafe Coyote in Old Town. It was an amazing opportunity to meet some Webbies from the area.  It was also nice talking with Dean and Mrs. Neilson, Admiral and Mrs. Olsen, and Mr and Mrs. Keith Michell about the great things that have happened and are happening at Webb. In addition to the great contacts and catching up, the food was amazing. I had a carne asada torta, which was unreal.

Overall the evening was full of good food and good people; but hey, would you expect anything less from a Webbie gathering?

La Jolla!

La Jolla!

Better Late Than Never

Better late than never.

Greetings From San Diego!

My name is Samantha Griswold and I am currently a junior at Webb Institute. This winter, I will be working for M Ship Co, LLC. in San Diego, California for my winter work term.

I have been in San Diego for two weeks now and I am certain that I never want to leave. Despite that fact that this has been the coldest winter San Diego has seen in ages, I still feel like I am in a tropical paradise. My friend Andrew, who I met during my summer Sea term aboard the Horizon Reliance, asked me when I was going to get over the palm trees. My response: NEVER.

Having only been to San Diego for two weeks, I feel as though I have accomplished quite a bit. My first day here, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take a boat ride to the end of Point Loma and watch some of my friends surf. I had brought my surfboard with me on the plane, but somehow the cold water and overhead swell seemed pretty daunting, especially after a 5 and a half hour flight. Hopefully I will get the opportunity to use my surfboard at some point.

During my first weekend, I took to opportunity to explore Ocean Beach and Point Loma. Fortunately my friend Andrew had a car and were were able to "cruise the cliffs" checking the swell and eat some delicious Califronia Burritos on the pier. The weekend was kind of a blur and I struggled to take in San Diego and all its grandeur. During that time, I also had the opportunity to go to Belmont Park, where my phone took a tumble from one of the oldest wooden rollercoasters on the West Coast. Needless to say, I had to take a trip to Mission Valley mall to get it replaced.

Having done all that, the highlight of my weekend was going to Hodads, a "bomb" burger place, as my SoCal friends would say. I have been twice in the two weeks I have been here...

My first two days of work came and went with a lot of manual labor, we are in the middle of remodelling the office. The next week was pretty interesting and I quickly got the feel for how things worked at the office and began working on my projects. My evenings were spent enjoying the hot tub and pool at the housing complex in which I live with John and Elli. Hanging in a hot tub, beneath a row of palm trees in the middle of January isn't too bad.

The next weekend I was here was spent between La Jolla and Sunset Cliffs. La Jolla was absolutely amazing; I have never seen so many seals in my life, or any seals for that matter. I spent the day watching seals sunbath and laughing at Pelicans silly mannerisms. I even found myself mimicking some of them...awkward.

I also ventured down to Sunset Cliffs, a place I have recently become very familiar with. It was awesome. Because the tide was so low, my friend Andrew and I were able to splash through tide pools, climb over cliffs, crawl into caves, and walk, very carefully, across slippery sea grass. I even saw a live starfish!

On Sunday, I spent most of the day in the pool with Andrew and John, and just before dinner, John and I said our goodbyes to Andrew as he headed back to Califonia Maritime Academy.

This week thus far has been pretty exciting as well. On Monday, John and I made delicious tacos (Special thanks to Andrew for teaching us how to cook amazing tortillas!). On Tuesday, all the Webb Interns went to the SNAME Southwest Section meeting and watched a presentation about Floating Platforms by a Webb graduate. It was really interesting!

That's it for now! Sorry for the incredibly long post!
